CUSTOM FURNITURE BY RACHEL ASHWELL®

 An Overview:

Rachel Ashwell furniture does much more than just combine comfort with exquisite good looks. All Rachel Ashwell pieces are handmade in Los Angeles, CA by quality craftsmen, using hardwoods and 8-way hand tie construction. The essence of Rachel Ashwell comfort can be found in our plush feather down cushions designed with a “character of mushiness”. The furniture is designed so that our generously cut slipcovers can be properly tucked underneath the seat cushions. Slipcovers are machine washable, pre-shrunk with over locked seams that won’t fray and feature zippers for easy use.

How are the frames constructed?

Our frames are all constructed of premium grade kiln dried five quarter hard wood. All of our frames are “bench built”, means that the frames are not pre-made or mass produced on an assembly line, each frame is made to order. We use five quarter hardwood, which is a thicker and wider piece of wood, in our construction instead of the 1” thick industry standard. The frames are corner blocked and double doweled, screwed at the joints, glued and stapled. Corner blocked is a system of joining the frame at the seam/corner to prevent shifting or separating. Double doweled is used in top quality wood working and reinforces the joints of the body of furniture. Two wood dowels are inserted through the blocked joint/corner to add lateral stability.  Our frames are made to last; there is a 10-year guarantee on the frame and spring construction. Rachel Ashwell furniture is fully upholstered in cotton duck underneath our slipcovers. Under this cotton duck we use 2-3 layers of Dacron on top of the foam and line the foam with cotton batting.

Does the furniture come with springs in the seats?

Rachel Ashwell furniture pieces have an “8-way hand tied” spring construction hand placed with eight gauge steel coils springs. Springs are coiled vertically, and are tied 8 ways to each surrounding coil then to the frame to make them extra secure. It is a more laborious technique that assures the most comfortable deck support and overall more springy and balanced ride to the seat deck.

How are the cushions constructed?

The essence of the Rachel Ashwell comfort can be found in our feather and down cushions designed with a “character of mushiness”. We offer two different types of cushions and pillows: down and feather or synthetic. The down and feather seat cushions are made of an envelope of 90% feather and 1% down wrapping around a high density foam core. Our down and feather blend is a by-product of the meat industry (duck). The foam core gives the seat more resiliencies and allows the seat to maintain its shape while keeping its soft cushy feel. An additional feather proof ticking zippered cover is added to insure that no feathers or duct escape. The down and feather goes through a “hyper-cleaning” process. This process cleans the down and feather three times with a gentle cleaner that leaves the down and feathers with a natural pH. This removes dirt and dust particles assuring an allergy free, fluffier, stronger, and longer lasting cushion. The synthetic cushions are high density foam core wrapped in polyester. The synthetic fill is a polyester fiber. This gives a resilient, soft and light weight alternative to the down and feather.

How should I care for my slipcovers?

All Rachel Ashwell slipcovers are pre-shrunk. Our slipcovers are designed and constructed for home machine washing and drying. Our product is meant to be washed and easy to care for. When washing, it is okay to wash cool and tumble dry low. Rachel Ashwell pieces have zippers for a more tailored fit. We do not recommend dry cleaning or bleach. Dry cleaning is a chemical process which causes the fabric to weaken and disintegrate. Dry cleaning can also fade the colors in a fabric more quickly than machine washing. We recommend closing all zippers on the slipcovers before washing.
